A solo adventure: "Alone" reveals Marc Copland, one of the most popular pianists on the international jazz scene, in purest form with only the listener vis-à-vis. And he surprises with three superb interpretations of songs from Canadian Joni Mitchell. Alongside pieces by Mal Waldron, Sammy Cahn, Wayne Shorter, and Bronislaw Kaper are three of Copland's own compositions on this CD - including "Night Whispers", an extended piece of over eleven minutes. Along with "Into the Silence" and "Blackboard", this piece reflects a lot on Copland's ability to generate a suspenseful atmospheric intensity. Marc Copland solo. A listening experience to be reflected. These pieces have something magical that is only found in exceptional music: they throw the listener back into his or her own feelings and thoughts. And in this respect, the last two lines of the Bill Zavatsky poem that appears on the CD's cover is especially appropriate: "Let's listen while we have the chance to music no one's heard." And that's what we hear when we, with Marc Copland, listen "alone" deep within ourselves.

PRESS QUOTES

CD of the Month: "Marc Copland is one of the best pianists in jazz history, an underrated artist who's in the same creative level of Keith Jarrett and Ahmad Jamal, all with particular and peculiar musical styles. "Alone", Marc's solo adventure, comes out on the Munich-based Pirouet label after this pianist's extraordinary "New York Trio Recordings" series of three CDs." (Arnaldo DeSouteiro, Jazzstation.com)
Critic's Choice: "Harmony is Mr. Copland's great strength, and he colors in most of these songs with muted, shifting hues. Recorded and produced with an obsessive standard of intimacy it revels in poetic self-containment." (Nate Chinen, New York Times)
"He may be better-known in Europe, but Copland is one of America's too well-kept secrets. Those who've not yet been charmed by his inward-looking pianism couldn't start at a better place than the aptly titled Alone ..." (John Kelman, All About Jazz)
"Alone is a beginning-to-end gorgeous work of art, solo piano at its highest level." (Dan McClenaghan, All About Jazz)
"Alone offers gentler tonal language, allowing Copland to share a more personal musical experience. Soft, mellow, and light are all appropriate adjectives to describe the music found here." (Eduard Blanco, All About Jazz)
